> Character Description

K'ani is an alien (known as an Aseilan, from her homeworld Aseila) who has chosen to live among the races on this planet. Her light blue-grey skin shimmers in the available light. Atop her head is a shock of short, sky-blue hair that cascades to either side of her rounded head. She looks straight back at her observers with large, deep blue eyes, showing signs of acute awareness and a deep intellect. She has a long, wide snout that looks something like a dolphin's beak, though a bit more blunt and with nostrils at the end. When she opens her mouth to speak, you can see a set of fine teeth, and perhaps even the long, serpentine tongue within. Her delphine muzzle blends in smoothly to the gentle curve of her neck, a lighter shade of grey sweeping down her front to her chest.

Her body is mostly humanoid, but it is quite unlike any other land-based species that exists here. Staying true to the bluish hue of her body, she normally wears a long, dark blue, short-sleeved kimono, framed in black and patterned with flowers, covering most of her body. However, where you would expect to see arms, you instead see a total of eight long, fairly thick but tapered tentacles, four at each arm, each one capable of moving about independently. She curls the blue-grey tendrils around for you, demonstrating their sheer flexibility and giving you an idea of what she can do with them. The kimono also hides the gentle curves of her feminine body, which aside from the tentacles appears to be very much humanoid. And peeking out from the bottom of her kimono are six more tentacles, much thicker than those of her arms, appearing to be darker in appearance, but no less flexible.

K'ani is an accomplished xenologist among her race. She originally came to study our planet and its inhabitants as you might expect them to do: Observe it from a distance with a variety of tools. However, after spending quite some time learning about us, she became so intrigued that she engaged in extensive research of our governmental and legal systems, our businesses and customs, and eventually decided she wanted to experience it first-hand. She felt she identified with Japanese customs the most, so she adopted the traditional Japanese dress and some of their customs, then came to live among us. Her personal ship sits idle on the far side of the moon, ready to retrieve her if the need arises.

While her exact age is unknown (she doesn't talk about it much), most people would guess K'ani to be the equivalent of a 35-40-year-old woman. She is very intelligent, extremely patient, kind and fun-loving, easy-going and open-minded. She makes friends quickly and doesn't seem to mind the usual awkwardness people experience when they meet her for the first time. She enjoys learning as much as she can about the people around her as well as discussing her own race, culture and customs. She comes across to many as being quite wise, but she sees many of her friends as being wiser than herself in many ways.

> Background / Notes

K'ani was originally the name of a secondary character in Dorsola's Story, a short-story I started and eventually abandoned, which was meant to describe how Dorsola came about. She was originally just another dolphin, but I decided to recycle her name in creating the alien scientist. K'ani herself was originally inspired by, of all things, a preview for an episode of the hit TV show "Futurama". This particular preview showed a magenta-colored alien with facial tentacles, kissing another character. To this day, I'm still not entirely sure what the connection was between that character and the one I created.

Contrary to what people may believe, K'ani was not designed to be a sexual character (a "yiff character" as they're referred to in furry fandom). I developed her to explore some science-fiction concepts I wanted to write about. Of course, she gets quite a bit of attention from furs around the globe who are into various sexual fetishes (most notably Hentai), and K'ani will sometimes engage in tinyplots along those lines - her tentacle-arms are well-suited for that. But much as I enjoy this sort of play, I often prefer to play K'ani as a deeper, more intellectual character than most of my other characters. She generally develops very deep and (hopefully) long-lasting relationships with people.

K'ani can be found on SPR, FurryMUCK and Tapestries.
